AMBASSADOR BLOG: Presidio Trail Run

Presidio Trail Run
Dan Pasquale

When people think of San Francisco, the classic images that often come to mind are of cable cars, Alcatraz and of course the Golden Gate Bridge. But for some of us, images of wooded trails, rustic natural beauty and year-round cool weather pop into our brains much faster. How can this be – are we really talking about the same place here?

Glad you asked! In case you haven’t noticed, some of the Bay Area’s greatest and most historic trails are right in our own backyard at the Presidio. The park’s 24 miles of trails were once part of San Francisco’s great military history and are still very much a part of it today. The Presidio’s trail system boasts amazing intangibles for runners and hikers alike; and the park provides perfect year-round cool weather, breathtaking scenery and views and a diverse and well-maintained trail system that never gets old. And for those of us that like to run longer distances, the Presidio boats a plenty of choices to suit anyone’s taste. One of my personal favorites is the Presidio Bay Area Ridge Trail . This 2.7 mile route is a small slice of the much larger Bay Area Ridge Trail , but offers a little sample of everything the park has to offer, including shaded trails through the Presidio’s national forest, great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay, and just enough of an incline/decline to keep us runners honest. It’s a great walk, run, and it can be a great place for the whole family with sections to suit all abilities!

Still not convinced, or not a big trail runner? Well, let’s up the ante with the ultimate ace in the hole! How about the chance to support our military veterans, learn a little about park history, and share a cold one with your running buddies after the event? On Saturday, August 12 th , at 10 AM, the Presidio will play host to it’s third Fun Run with Veterans with Team Red, White & Blue (Team RWB). Team RWB’s mission is to assist veterans transitioning from military life back into the civilian world…and they’re AMAZING at it! This is done through everything from social programs (such as bowling, BBQs, etc.) and includes activities as big as athletic events and even triathlons! In fact, Team RWB even has some crazy souls (all veterans too!) that run Ironman triathlons! And, as with all military veterans, these guys and gals know how to have a good time.

So lace up those running shoes and come on out this Saturday to run with some great people for a great cause in a great place. I mean really – how much more “greatness” do you need to convince yourself here people?!?! Come on out to the Presidio! It’s also the perfect chance to keep up (or start!) your training for the Giant Race at the end of the month! Team RWB will be there too, so come out next Saturday and get to know your veterans!
