MEET THE STARTING NINE
“I’m so excited to be a Giant Race ambassador. It has become a tradition for me to run with my sister and a group of friends at the SF Giant Race each year. We love the Giants, and enjoy running in our matching Giants outfits. We’re looking forward to running the series of Giant Races in 2020. I’m an active mother of two strong daughters. I am a first-grade teacher and have been a coach for the Girls on the Run program for 14 years. I also enjoy co-coaching the Vintage High School Cross-Country team and I’m a member of the Vinerunners running group in Napa. I have completed 11 marathons (including Boston, New York, and Chicago), 36 half-marathons (including 5 Giant Races), and over 30 5K’s. I have run every street in my town, and have been the first female from Napa to cross the finish line at the Napa Marathon 4 times, so my students call me the “fastest teacher in Napa”. I am currently on day 612 of a run-streak. I enjoy running on trails, roads, and on the track. I have run the year in miles each year since 2015. A goal of mine is to eventually complete all of the world-major marathons.”
Hi everyone! My name is Val and I’m from Stockton, CA. I’m a mommy of 2 girls and a husky. I love the Giant Race. This year will be my 3rd series sweep! I played in a Jr. Giants co-ed baseball team with my childhood friends. Our coach took us to our first SF Giants baseball game and I have had love for the team since then. I love being involved in the running community in my hometown, nearby cities and through the power of social media. I lost count of all half marathons, 10k’s and 5k’s. My life goal is to run a full marathon in every state in the US. I will be running my 4th state very soon. I invite you to join me for the 2020 Giant Race! This is going to be an awesome year!
Hi, I’m Alys and I’m thrilled to be returning to the Giant Race Starting 9! I went to my first San Francisco Giants game at age 4, began running at age 10, and have been hooked on both ever since. I ran my first Giant Race in 2015 & since then have completed 13, including 2x Series Sweep! I adore the SF Giants family & the runners community, as both have helped me through hard times in the past. Today I work in the medical field and am a big advocate for both physical & mental health. I use fitness as an outlet to help me find joy and peace in a very busy life. Catch me in Sac, San Jose, and SF this year, and always feel free to ask me any questions about this wonderful race series. Happy training!
Hey! My name is Bree and I’m thrilled to be part of the starting nine this year. I’m originally from Orange County, but I’ve been a Giants fan since I was in diapers. Even when singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame during the 7th inning stretch, I was always taught to yell GIANTS! regardless of whether they were playing. I’ve been running in the Giant Race series since 2015- collecting as many medals and bobble heads as possible. For the last three years (this will be the 4th!) I’ve done the series sweep. Last year I even did the Lou Seal challenge! I try to run about 4 days each week to stay healthy, train for the next race, and get some time to myself to think. When I’m not running, I’m supporting new teachers in the Bay Area by day, and making cards for my calligraphy company or going to Giants games by night. You can find me watching Lou Seal more than the game itself, but what can I say, he’s the best!
Hello Everyone! My name is Jane. I’m honored and extremely excited to be back for a second year as a part of the Giant Race Ambassador team! Running is my passion. I especially enjoy the Giant Race Series because many Giant fans choose it as their first race. New runners are often intimidated – they wonder if they will be able to finish? I’m here to support you. If it’s your first 5k – Run with me! I can pace you to finish in about 45 minutes. (We have more fun in back of the pack!) This season promises to be exciting and fun-filled – culminating with the Lou Seal Challenge on September 6th! I’ll be at all four races and cannot wait to meet you. While each of us “Runs our own Race” we all “Run Giant Together!”
Hi, I’m Josh! I bleed Black and Orange. I am a California native currently calling Scottsdale, Arizona home. I’m a Sports Fanatic. You’ll find me running no matter the season, whether it’s 110 degrees, pouring rain, or both (love those AZ Monsoons) I’ll always find a way to be out in the World being active. Running has become my lifestyle. Trail Running is a new passion of mine I’m exploring more of this year. Here’s to this upcoming race season. May it be our best one yet. There’s no better community I’ve found than the Giant Race community. It’s an honor to journey the year with you!
My name is Melissa and I’m thrilled to be one of the 2020 Giant Race Starting Nine. I’m a Bay Area native, nonprofit marketing and fundraising manager, outdoors enthusiast, volunteer, runner, and lifelong Giants fan. I grew up watching the Giants at Candlestick Park (JT Snow is still my favorite player). I ran my first half marathon in 2009 and since then have completed 80 half marathons and 8 full marathons. My main goal for 2020 is to reach my 100th lifetime half marathon! I have so many incredible experiences and memories thanks to the Giant Race — from high-fiving Brian Wilson along the course in 2011, to PRs, to hanging out in the outfield. I can’t wait to run with you all this year! See you at the start line!
YAS! I was very excited to be selected as one of the Starting Nine for the Giant Race. My name is Rogelio Alfaro, but my friends call me ROLO. My personal pledge as an ambassador is to inspire everyone by sharing my passion for running, the Giants, and life. Raised in San Francisco, I grew up playing soccer-shout out McAteer High Jaguars-and loving the Giants! I found long-distance running after one of my friends talked me into signing up for a half-marathon back in 2009. I wasn’t sure at first, but there is something special about reaching double-digit distances and since then I’ve been hooked. I completed a full marathon in 2010, and in 2011 I completed my first Giant Race half-marathon. It has become an annual tradition for me, and since then I have run about 22 different Giant Race events, over 50 other events including a sprint triathlon, mud runs, and several Spartan events. I’m not saying it to brag, but I believe if I can do it, you can too! Oracle Park is like my second home, so if you see me say hi!
Hi, I’m Sera! This is my third season as a Starting Nine ambassador. I was born and raised in Hawaii, but moved to Arizona in 2016, the same year I ran my first Giant Race! I am a small business owner and a soon-to-be ASU graduate and law student. When I’m not running, my passions include cattle dogs, pesto, and post offices. See you on the field!
